“I cannot express enough how much this helps me - the cost of tools/clothing can be very expensive during the first year and with winter coming this financial support will allow me to ensure I am warm this winter! Although my pre-apprenticeship was costly, it was worth it to do something I am passionate about and fall in love with more and more every day. The first few apprenticeship years, coupled with the cost of schooling, have upfront costs that will all be worth it one day but most assuredly can be hard to overcome when first starting off. Because the government grants are not made available to apprentices until they have completed their first year (and sometimes not until second year as the first in class component must also have been completed to apply) the SOY scholarship helps us get over the first year “hump”. "Winning this scholarship affords me the opportunity to stress a great deal less. Unfortunately along with the vast knowledge that comes from going to post secondary school, fees are always tagging along. Although there is help through OSAP, fees are still due. This scholarship means a great deal to me as it allows me to worry less about my family helping me financially but it allows me to focus more on school. My 13 year old brother was recently diagnosed with diabetes. A great deal of emotional stress fell over my parents as well as financial stress. “I am extremely grateful for this scholarship. When I was offered a spot in a level 1 class I jumped at the opportunity. Turns out it was in Owen Sound which is three and a half hours away from where I live. So, I was unemployed for two months, paying rent where I call home and to my temporary place in Owen Sound. On top of that the books needed for level one amounted to well over $1000. The funds from this will go towards paying for those books. Thank you, Support Ontario Youth!”
