We’re excited to share another installment in our mentor blog series, where skilled trades professionals share their career journeys, insights, and advice for the next generation.

Each mentor brings a unique perspective…and this time, Elvira walks us through her hands-on path from autobody work to HVAC-R to electrical, showing how exploring different trades can lead to a rewarding and unexpected career.

Why Trying Different Trades Can Lead You Somewhere Great

“Hi, I’m Elvira! I’m currently working as an electrician for a passenger rail company, focusing on locomotives and rail cars—also known as rolling stock. It’s not where I imagined I’d end up when I first started, but I’m so glad I made it here.

I’ve explored several trades over the years. I first got into autobody work as a teenager through my dad and his friend’s shop. I never formally apprenticed, but I spent a few years doing collision repair. There’s a lot of artistry involved in that work, attention to detail, patience, and a steady hand. I think it’s a great trade for people with a creative side.

Later, I studied the arts academically, but I eventually chose to pivot to the skilled trades for more stability. I wanted something hands-on and technical, so I applied for a pre-apprenticeship program through a local union. That’s how I started my journey in HVAC-R. Through that program, I earned my Gas Fitter license and eventually completed my 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic apprenticeship.

Before I began my apprenticeship, I picked up some general construction work, framing fences and decks. It gave me valuable job site experience and a foot in the door. General labour roles can be a great starting point, especially if you’re curious but not sure where to begin.

As an HVAC-R apprentice, I was often working alone in the field, doing maintenance and troubleshooting. It could be tough and unpredictable, but I learned so much—especially through mistakes. I leaned on optional training from my union and took every chance to learn from experienced mechanics. The trade opened a lot of doors for me and taught me how to handle pressure, adapt to change, and problem-solve in the real world.

Eventually, I transitioned into industrial electrical work with the same employer. I completed my 442A apprenticeship and later challenged the 309A exam to earn that licence too. My
experience with HVAC-R gave me a strong foundation for understanding machines and systems. In industrial settings, that knowledge is essential.

One thing I’ve learned is that there’s no one “right” way into the trades. Sometimes it starts with a general labour job. Sometimes it starts with art. The important thing is to stay curious and open to new paths. If you have a creative mindset and like solving problems, the skilled trades might surprise you.

I’ve been in the trades for over 20 years now and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” – Elvira, SOY Mentor
