Exploring career options can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re unsure whether college or university is the only path to success. The skilled trades offer another route: hands-on, in-demand, and full of opportunities to learn while you earn. Automotive apprenticeships are a pathway where you can build both practical skills and a meaningful career.

Keep reading for Mentor Emily’s suggestions on how to get started…

How to Get Started in the Trades

“If you’ve ever wondered if the traditional college or university route is the only way to a career, know that apprenticeships are a real alternative. They let you earn while you learn, gaining practical, hands-on experience from day one, and your wages grow as your skills do.

To get started, you need to meet a few basic requirements: be at least 16 years old, have your high school diploma or equivalent, and find an employer willing to sponsor your apprenticeship. A great way to get your foot in the door is to start as a lube tech or apprentice helper, doing oil changes, tire swaps, or other basic shop tasks. It’s a way to prove your interest and work ethic.

Once you secure a sponsor, you’ll register your apprenticeship with the Ministry, sign a training agreement, and begin logging your work hours. You’ll also attend in-class training at a college or trade school to learn essential skills like engine performance, braking systems, electrical systems, and vehicle diagnostics. Combining classroom learning with on-the-job experience ensures you develop the full set of skills needed to become a licensed automotive service technician.

Along the way, mentorship is key. Experienced journeypersons can guide you, answer questions, and help you navigate challenges. Joining a community of apprentices and techs also helps you grow and stay motivated. Investing in your tools, keeping track of your hours, and asking questions will make a big difference.

The rewards are huge! Not just the technical skills and the income, but the pride of seeing your work make a difference every day, whether it’s helping a customer, solving a tough problem, or mentoring someone new. If you’re motivated, curious, and ready to work hard, the apprenticeship pathway can set you up for a successful and fulfilling career in automotive.”
